Future research and policymaking on climate change adaptation: Where we would like to go – and where we might have to go
Western Norway Research Institute and professor Carlo Aall were invited to a Nordic conference in Kuopio on 11 June, organised by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and the Nordic Joint Committee for Agriculture and Food Research, to present the main message from the recently held Nordic Conference on Climate Change Adaptation (NOCCA). The title of the talk was "Future research and policymaking on climate change adaptation: Where we would like to go– and where we might have to go". One message was that the consequences in the Nordic region of climate change in other countries ("transboundary climate risk") will likely prove to be more serious in the long term than the consequences of local climate change, which has so far received attention in climate adaptation work. Furthermore, Aall pointed out that with the political changes internationally with a possible weakening of international climate commitments, climate adaptation research must start to address the "impossible" question of how the world can adapt to the dramatic consequences of tipping point events, such as the loss of rainforests or the weakening of the Gulf Stream, actually occurring.
