"Does it matter if it's true or not?": The South Asian diaspora's experiences with misinformation and fake news

The project will map how media — news and affects — travels across national boundaries, how it is understood, through what strategies, and what kind of effects it produces. For instance, what is understood as news, and what becomes fake news or mis-dis-malinformation and how.  It will study these questions from the point of view of the south asian diaspora in Norway, how they navigate the transnational mediascape and how they make sense of events amidst the fragmented and heterogeneous mediascape of news, social media, and private messages. We will also engage journalists and fact-checkers in Norway to understand their challenges when reporting on transnational media and how fact-checking and news reporting can embrace sense-making as a practice to tackle misinformation, fake news and its varied sociotechnical modalities.
