Bjørn Christian Weinbach has been a researcher at Vestlandsforsking since August 2022 and started as a PhD candidate in computer science in January 2023. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from NTNU in Gjøvik and a master’s degree in computer technology from the University of Stavanger. Bjørn Christian’s academic focus lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and marine ecology.

His doctoral research focuses on developing AI-driven methods tailored to underwater environments to enhance ecological monitoring. The goal of his research is to contribute to the development of scalable AI tools for monitoring marine biodiversity. Bjørn Christian’s broader academic interests include machine learning, applied statistics, and ecological informatics. His research is driven by a desire to leverage artificial intelligence to support sustainable environmental policy decisions and initiatives such as the Global Biodiversity Framework.

In addition to his research, Bjørn Christian is committed to ensuring that technology serves as a democratic resource and actively promotes awareness of how data and AI impact society today.
