Tourism to the rock formations Trolltunga, Preikestolen and Kjerag, located in the mountains of Western Norway, has increased rapidly the last few years. The massive flow of tourists poses new challenges for local and national rescue services, but also for the local communities as a whole.

The communities need to develop tourism management strategies to secure that the tourism in the area remains sustainable. Vestlandsforsking has been appointed by Odda municipality and other local stakeholders to analyse the causes of the high number of rescue operations, and to develop, in cooperation with the local stakeholders, measures to improve risk management.
