On the Construction of Ontologies based on Natural Language Semantic
Abstract:
Ontologies based on natural language semantic are supposed to represent the mental models that speakers of a language possess of domains. They are thus commonly understood and may serve as efficient interfaces for communicating information about their domain of application. To determine an ontological representation of a mental model one must consider not only the meaning of isolated words, but also how they enter into true sentences and valid inferences.
In this paper a method is presented that consists in identifying true sentences and using valid inferences to construct taxonomies for categorisation hierarchies. The method is discussed and then applied to the construction of a taxonomy for the domain of tasks provided by the Norwegian municipalities.
