With alternative fuels, we mean new types of fuels for cars and other means of transport, as alternatives to the conventional fuels petrol and diesel. Special focus is directed towards two types of fuel:
1. Renewable fuel produced from biological materials. This includes biodiesel, the alcohols ethanol and methanol, in addition to biogas. There is increased attention to blending of biofuels into conventional fuels, and the health and environmental problems this entails.
2. Hydrogen, which can be produced from different energy sources, such electrolysis of water and from natural gas.
The research is directed toward understanding societal conditions for phasing in and the health and environmental implications of the various alternative fuels.
